Ancient Education:
There are many things that we have learned about education through the study of ancient history. According to the Merriam Dictionary education is “the act or process of imparting or acquiring general knowledge, developing the powers of reasoning and judgment, and generally of preparing oneself or others intellectually for mature life.” The way education is “done” now and the ways education was “done” in ancient times has changed dramatically, but education still serves the same purpose. Plato, Socrates, and Aristotle all had a purpose of producing a virtuous and morally good person through education. We can see many likeness and differences between ancient and modern education and can see how ancient education has had great influence the way we educate today.
This website is intended to provide a look into the education of the ancient time period along with some insight into some of the most influential philosophers of the time.
Enjoy!
